Social-Emotional Learning (SEL):

Social and emotional learning (SEL) provides a foundation for safe and positive learning, and enhances students' ability to succeed in school, careers, and life. At AIS-R we understand that explicitly teaching Social-Emotional competencies prepares students for success in school and beyond. It is through the explicit teaching and modeling of Social-Emotional competencies that students are provided the opportunity to demonstrate and live the attributes of being an AIS-R Eagle, listed above. The five Social-Emotional Competencies are defined below:

• Self-awareness - the ability to accurately recognize one’s emotions and thoughts and their influence on behavior. This includes accurately assessing one’s strengths and limitations and possessing a well-grounded sense of confidence and optimism.
• Self-management - the ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations. This includes managing stress, controlling impulses, motivating oneself, and setting and working toward achieving personal and academic goals.
• Social awareness - the ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures, to understand the social and ethical norms for behavior, and to recognize family, school, and community resources and supports.
• Relationship skills - the ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups. This includes communicating clearly, listening actively, cooperating, resisting inappropriate social pressure, negotiating conflict constructively, and seeking and offering help when needed.
• Responsible decision making - the ability to make constructive and respectful choices about personal behavior and social interactions based on consideration of ethical standards, safety concerns, social norms, the realistic evaluation of consequences of various actions and the well-being of self and others.

Home Learning:

Home learning is dependent upon student need and is assigned respectively. AIS-R does not promote or support a “homework” expectation/environment. Teachers determine a student’s specific need for home learning due to absence and/or the need for further practice.

Animals and Allergies:

Our learning environments support the natural curiosity of our AIS-R Eagles and therefore incorporates natural elements such as plants, soil/sand, flowers, and fruits/vegetables as well as the care for live animals of different species which may include but not limited to birds, lizards, and small mammals (guinea pigs, hamsters, etc.). Should a child be allergic in such conditions, accommodations may be possible. It is the expectation of the parent to inform the nurse of their children’s allergies. No child is admitted to AIS-R without a completed medical form.

After School Activities:

On Campus:

The After School Activities Program offers a wide range of activities for students in middle school. Most of the activities are designed by individual teachers and are aimed at specific grade levels. These activities include sports and recreation, arts and crafts, and fun games. The minimum number of participants in an ASA is 10. Activities run from 3:30 - 4:20 with offerings on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday. If less than 10 students sign up for an offered ASA, the ASA will be cancelled or combined with another ASA. If an ASA is cancelled, the students enrolled may be offered an ASA that has open spots. Parents will be contacted by the ES Office for additional choices.

Parent Partnerships & Communication:

Open, honest and ongoing communication is critical to the success of the educational partnership we strive for between students, parents and teachers. We ask that you follow the Communicating Issues and Concerns at AIS-R Flowchart when sharing concerns. The following are sources for school related information:

• K-12 Activity Calendar: A calendar of all AIS-R events is shared via our Eagle Site..
• Email: Families can email teachers and administration with questions and concerns.
• Google Classroom: A weekly summary of assignments for the past week and week ahead is shared with parents. Students have access to all learning materials and activities and are provided with calendar notifications and reminders of upcoming assignments.
• Newsflash: A weekly newsletter of upcoming events, articles, and items of special interest to parents and students is emailed to all parents and can be viewed online through Moodle.
• Skyward: Is our school information system that allows parents to view their child’s report cards, MAP scores, and school messages. Each parent is issued a Skyward ID and password. Please keep your skyward contact information current.
• Website: Browse the school’s website to find general information about each grade level and general school information www.aisr.org.
• AIS-R APP: Houses the latest news, daily updates, events, social media, and pictures of what is happening at AIS-R (Apple and Android).
