CEEB CODE/ACT CODE: 692126Mission StatementAs a school committed to excellence, we will educate and inspire our students to be responsible, productive, and ethical world citizens with the skills and passion to think creatively, reason critically, communicate effectively, and learn continuously. We will accomplish this in an American educational environment characterized by high measurable standards and a clearly defined, appropriately interrelated college preparatory curriculum, implemented by superior staff in partnership with students, parents and the community.
School/Student BodyThe American International School-Riyadh, established in 1963, is a fully accredited co-ed, K-12 school by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of International Schools. AIS-R currently has an enrollment of 1259 students and the campus is located in Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia. The school includes an Elementary building, Middle and High School building, gymnasium, an auditorium/theatre, track, two libraries and eight technology centers. The high school comprises 420 of the 1259 students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. There are currently 83 students in the Senior Class of 2012. Fifty-six different nationalities make up the student body of expatriate and host country national students. American and Canadian students account for 42% of the population. Saudi students account for 13% of the population. The parents of AIS-R students come from a variety of business, government and other professional backgrounds. AIS-R operates under the authorization of the Ministry of Education and is an IB World School. 100% of AIS-R graduates attend 4 year university programs.
Academic ProgramAIS-R provides a college-preparatory educational program in the English language and offers both the U.S. High School Diploma and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in grades 11 and 12. Students have the option to take the IB external examinations in individual subjects. In this case, the student would be awarded an IB Certificate recording the level of achievement in that particular subject. AIS-R’s school year consists of two semesters beginning in early September and ending in early June. Students enroll in a maximum of eight courses using a 4 X 4 block alternating Day 1/Day 2 schedule and all classes are 85 minutes in length. One-half credit is awarded for the successful completion of each semester course with a passing mark of D-. Graduation requirements include a minimum of 25 credits including 12.5 hours of community service for each year at AIS-R. Higher Level and Standard Level IB courses include: English A1, Arabic, French, Spanish, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Visual Art, History, Economics, and Business and Marketing. Math Studies, Drama and Music are offered at the SL level only. 100% of AIS-R teachers are licensed and certified to instruct in all U.S. Diploma courses and IB Diploma courses. Rank and GPA PolicyThe international and frequently changing composition of the student body does not permit equitable or accurate comparison between students. Therefore, class rank is not reported as a measure of a student's academic standing. The cumulative GPA reflects courses taken at AIS-R only using a 4.3 scale. Grades from previous schools are not included. IB Higher Level II courses are weighted by an
additional .3 on grades of B+ or higher.
ExtracurricularAn active co-curricular program compliments the high school curriculum and includes Student Council, Model United Nations, National Honor Society, Drama, Musical and Fine Art productions. Varsity and Junior Varsity teams compete in the International Schools Sports League of Riyadh (ISSLR); the Saudi Arabian Intra-Kingdom Activities Conference (SAIKAC); and internationally in the International Schools Athletic Conference (ISAC) in Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball, Track and Field, Tennis, Cricket, Badminton, Softball and Cross Country.
