The One Act Plays consisted of two shows - Murder in the Knife Room and 12 Angry Jurors.

Murder in the Knife Room

What happens when you have one mysterious host, one clever inspector, and 9 incredibly wacky suspects, all in the same room? Complete and utter chaos.
This play, which was written by Jonathan Rand, is a murder-mystery spoof. It is comedic, dramatic, and very wacky. Murder in the Knife Room is the story of Mysterious Host, who gathers a group of unsuspecting people in his Knife Room, only to be murdered by one of them. It is up to the inspector to solve the mystery, which is quite possibly the craziest, most puzzling case of her career. A series of reenactments reveal the motives of the suspects. The suspects include Santa Claus, a former backstreet boy, an old lady, a millionaire, and many, many more. All this comes to a shocking conclusion when they finally dis-cover who killed Mysterious Host.

12 Angry Jurors

When a man is accused of abducting half a dozen cats, it’s a simple open-and-shut case, even for a jury that is filled with odd balls like a dim-witted PR guy, a bickering couple, and a creepy man ob-sessed with French fries. After all, every scrap of evidence indicts the accused. And yet, Juror #8, a wannabe lawyer, believes that the “Cat Burglar” is innocent. Will he be able to sway the other jury members? Or will they side with Juror #3 the only sane person in the room? A hilarious parody of 12 Angry Men.

Annie - The Musical PDF Print E-mail

AIS-R's Middle and High School Fine and Performing Arts Departments are very proud to welcome you to this year's Fall musical production, Annie.

This musical is a well-known and loved classic which has been performed on Broadway and also adapted for film.  It is set in the 1930's during the Great Depression in New York City and features a lovable and unwaveringly positive orphan, Annie.  Annie's adventures and mishaps in her quest to find her real parents take her from the Girls Annex of the NYC Orphanage, where she has lived all her life, to the mansion of Oliver Warbucks - the richest man in the world!

We are extremely proud to have a combined middle and high school student cast and production crew!  Additionally, we are very excited to have a live student and faculty orchestra accompanying our cast!  We feel quite fortunate to have a whole team of directors, choreographers and an extended production crew all actively involved throughout the process in helping make the production come together.  A true collaboration of this nature is something brand new to AIS-R's Performing Arts Department and we hope it is the first of many more to come!

It has been a privilege to be a part of this musical adventure.  We have watched students' self-confidence bud and bloom as they see themselves from new perspectives.  We have seen them work together as a team, learn and demonstrate commitment and focus and, of course, have fun!  Making the process of Annie an exciting, challenging but rewarding and memorable experience for the students has been our primary aim, and it is very rewarding to know that this has been the feeling among them as an ensemble.  We believe all of these things are so vitally important towards shaping them as productive individuals.  In a time when the global economy is not far removed from the economical context of Annie, it is our hope, as directors, that audiences will leave the Larkin Theater emulating Annie's cheery, optimistic demeanor and perspective on her "Hard Knock Life" and inspired to be "fully dressed with a smile" . . .

A few couples arrive at the 10th wedding anniversary of a prominent social couple, only to find that the host has been shot in the earlobe, and the hostess, butler and cook are missing in action.  Before they know it, they are in the midst of a zany series of twisted rumors, lies, disaster and deceit as they try to unravel the hilarious events of the evening!

Directing is certainly one of my greatest passions and it has been so rewarding working with this dynamic cast.

To the cast and crew - I am incredibly grateful to you for your commitment to the production from start to finish, amidst inadvertent stumbling blocks along the way.  We have certainly shared more laughter than trials in the process which has made working with you a pleasure!  I do hope you, too, have had as much of a fun, memorable experience as I have.  In the beginning you were but 'seeds' in the gardening process of the play, but I can honestly say that I am incredibly proud of the complimentary 'bouquet' you have blossomed into as an ensemble.  Rumors you say? Well, these words are in fact, 'straight from the horse's mouth' and must, therefore, be true!

My final wish for you (the audience) this evening comes from an old Irish blessing:  "May you leave here with a smile on your lips and laughter in your heart!"

Without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to introduce you, to this year's Spring Play.  Sit back, relax, and enjoy an evening of ridiculous, silly, over-the-top behavior in . . . Rumors!

Mrs. Claire Morris
The Director

Fall Concert 2010 PDF Print E-mail

At AIS-R, the halls are indeed alive with the sound of music!  At nearly every moment of the school day, and often after school as well, at least one of our performing groups is hard at work, rehearsing for an upcoming concert, performance, or event.  At our United Nations Celebration in October, upward of 280 students, from grades 3 - 12 sang and played their instruments to the delight of the AIS-R community and visiting dignitaries.  While AIS-R has a long and established tradition of excellent band and string programs, the newest kid on our musical block has been the creation of our choir program at both the middle school and high school levels.  Our school concerts are invariably unique and original, and our recent November Fall Concert, entitled "Celebrations" featuring over 160 music students, was no exception.

The evening was a milestone for the school in many ways:

  • -The concert opened with the combined MS and HS Bands, numbering 80 members, presenting “Fanfare for Trumpets”, featuring our 18 heralding trumpets.
  • -The concert debuted “Crossing the Desert,” a musical composition by Mr. Jay Winograd that was commissioned for the upcoming SAKAIC Music Festival.
  • -The concert featured our 60-member string ensembles and the introduction of Ms. Bronwen Gill to the AISR community.
  • -The concert also premiered the newest addition to our AIS-R Performing Arts Department- our Middle School and High School vocal ensemble under the direction of Mr. Jay Winograd.

From the magnificence of an 80-piece band, to the precision of our middle and high school string orchestras, to the gentle beauty of our choirs, the young musicians amazed the packed audience.  As one patron suggested afterward, "I only wish the concert didn't have to end...everybody was outstanding.”

In addition to our AIS-R performances, students have had the opportunity to showcase their talents away from school, both in the local community and on the international stage.  In recent years, both band and orchestra members have been selected to perform in the prestigious International Honor Band and Choir.  They most recently performed in Manila and Shanghai.  This year, three middle school girls have been selected to perform with the International Middle School Honor Choir in Doha in January.  Our AIS-R chapter of the TRI-M organization (Modern Music Masters) has performed at the U.S. Embassy at a reception for Rusty Schweikart.  Our elementary choir has also performed at winter celebrations at Escot Compound.

For those high school students who excel in their musical ensembles, we have added an IB music class to our class offerings.  In this class, upper division students can take their passion for music to an even higher level.  In our pilot class this year, we have six students, and we hope to expand this offering in the years to come.

As well, AIS-R has the privilege this year of hosting the SAIKAC Middle School Music Festival (our Inter-Kingdom Activities Conference) from April 26-28, 2011.  We are expecting over 100 students and 12 teachers from International Schools throughout the Kingdom to be in attendance.  An event of this magnitude always takes a great deal of community support in order to be successful.  AIS-R has a well-deserved reputation of being a gracious host to visiting schools.

We had a wonderful response of volunteers to host SAIKAC musicians in home-stays at our recent concert, yet we will need many more willing hosts to open their homes for this exciting musical event.

We invite you to be a home-stay to a couple of student-musicians for our upcoming SAIKAC Music Festival, as we enthusiastically anticipate filling our halls with the "sound of music." We invite you to be a part of this wonderful experience. If you are willing and able to host a middle school musician or two, please contact Stephen Raatz ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ), and you will be contacted with more information as the time of the festival draws near. Thank you in advance for your generosity in hosting and continuing to strengthen the positive AIS-R reputation in the Kingdom!

Music and young people...what a winning combination!
